This weeks Hooters Tour event experienced two days of frost delays which is very unusual for Florida. So with the short winter days, the second round had to be completed early this morning before the cut of -2 was determined. After it was all said and done, 42 players entered the final day with a three way tie at the top as James Vargas, Will Wilcox and Michael Thompson were all sitting at 8-under par after two rounds.
The final round turned out to be a shootout of money list leaders. Michael Thompson carded a bogey free round of 66 (-5) today as he continues to chase down money list leader Joe Affrunti who did not play in this weeks event. Co-leaders Will Wilcox and James Vargas had almost identical score cards as they both made six birdies on the day coming on five of the same holes (1,7,10,11 and 13). The difference came on the 8th hole where Wilcox made the only bogey in the group which opened the door for Vargas and his victory.
The win for Vargas moves him into the third spot just behind Thompson and Wilcox jumped into fifth on the money list. New England golfers had a tough week as Jon Curran was the only one of seven players cashing at Forrest Lakes, finishing 25th. Renner dropped to 4th, Oppenheim dropped to 6th and Welch fell out of the top ten as they all failed to cash this week. See the final scoreboard here.
Stop number eleven brings the Hooters Winter Tour to Diamondback Golf Club in Haines City, Florida January 19 – 21.
